Cover to cover 350 books later

One of the jobs librarians find difficult to get on top of is the time consuming business of covering new books as they arrive.
But help has been at hand for Sandon School library as part of a New England Mutual community service project.
Over several months two staff members spent an hour a week at the school during work hours and covered all 350 items in the big book library.
The teams of two managed to cover around 20 books in the hour and as a result received a Certificate of Recognition from the school “for outstanding dedication and support for student learning at Sandon Public School.”
“It has made such a huge difference,” said Librarian Jo Chorley.
“It is fabulous for us all to walk into the big book room and have access to all the books, rather than have a pile waiting to be covered.
“It is such a big task and it freed me up for more teaching time and has extended the life of the books. We are very grateful for this help.”
NEM Call Centre Manager Jo Pearce said her staff enjoyed community work and had identified the project as one that needed a helping hand.
“It is part of our culture to release staff members for this type of work on a regular basis and builds great team bonding,” she said.
For Call Centre Member Relationship Officer Joel Torbay and Lending Coordinator Nick van Baal the project fits in with the NEM community ethic.
“It’s nice to help out and we’ve thoroughly enjoyed it,” they agreed.
