It's all hands on deck as Guyra's new Sporting Complex gets underway

New England Mutual is donating $2000 towards the new Guyra Sporting Complex (GSC) at Lion's Park where work is expected to begin with the next week or so.

GSC Association President Darrin Towells outlined the details of the $126,000 venture at last week’s NEM breakfast in the town.

The funding for the project includes $63,000 from the state government’s Community Building Partnership program matched by $50,000 from Guyra Council and the remainder from the local sporting community.

Work on the new clubhouse and sporting fields will be undertaken by volunteers, with around 50 already putting their hands up to assist.

NEM CEO Kevin Dupé said Guyra was not only a great sporting town but a community where people worked together to support important projects.

“It is well known that there is nowhere like Guyra for getting things done,” he said.

“This new complex will be used not only Rugby Union and junior and senior Rugby League but also for cricket, hockey, touch football and netball, making it a very valuable addition to the town’s sporting infrastructure.

“The support for this project has been tremendous and we at NEM are very much part of the local community and are pleased to make our contribution.”

Mr Towells told breakfast guests that the first stage of the new complex which includes the new club house with dressing rooms, a bar and canteen, toilets and referee changing rooms, construction of a third playing field, an irrigation system and six new light poles would be completed by February next year in time for the start of the football season.

At present there are two fields on the Lion’s Park site used for Rugby Union and junior League. A third field would mean that one field could be quarantined for playing only and the other two for training.

Guyra’s Superspuds and Ghosts A League teams and other senior league teams currently play and train at the Guyra Showground which is no longer adequate, Mr Towells said.

“Guyra must be one of the top sporting communities with the number of players and sports in the town, both junior and senior,” he said.

“This new complex will be a massive thing for the town, great for players, coaches, referees and spectators. It will be the biggest community project undertaken in Guyra for many years and there is no shortage of volunteers to make it happen.”
