Guyra appeal for young families tops its target mark

An appeal on behalf of two Guyra families hit by tragedy has passed its $10,000 target mark with the drawing of a monster raffle at the local New England Credit Union (NECU) branch last week.

The appeal which has been led by the NECU Staff Foundation is to help the young families of Phillip Tibbs, who lost his battle with cancer in November last year, and Mitchell Cook, was killed in a car accident the following month. Each of the young men left behind wives and two children under four years of age.

The monster raffle, which offered 32 prizes donated by the Guyra and Armidale business communities, was drawn by Delena Tibbs and Dallas Cook pictured above with branch manager Sue Young.

The first three winners were - - 1st prize (2 nights for 2 at Opal Cove resort, Coffs Harbour)  – winner Taylah Brazier,Guyra; 2nd prize (1 rug donated by Hunt’s carpets & blinds) Keshav Timalsena, Guyra; 3rd prize (1 night for 2 in cottage-style accommodation at Moredun Ponds Farmstay) Chris Valencius , Armidale.

“Although it was a hard task for both women we thought it only fitting that they should draw the lucky numbers,” said NECU Guyra Branch Manager Sue Young.

“They are overwhelmed and so grateful for the support from the community. The appeal has caught the imagination of people across the region who contributed prizes and bought raffle tickets.”

Other fundraising events have included an auction/trivia night at the Guyra Bowling Club which raised $7,447. 40. Donations can still be made to the appeal at any branch of New England Credit Union.

“We will continue our fundraising until December,” Ms Young said. “We are planning street stalls in August and October and a wood raffle.  New England Credit Union prides itself on supporting not only organisations in our local area but also individuals and families in times of need.”
